Over 200 LMC alumni, board members and guests came to hear Robert P. Stall, Class of 2010 and President of Medina Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic hospital, speak at the LMC Awareness Breakfast.  Rob shared his thoughts on the "Servant Leader" and began his presentation by recounting the early history of the Cleveland Clinic.
Founded by four physicians in 1921, the Cleveland Clinic put patients first ("serve" the patient) by ensuring that all patients would benefit from the wisdom of a team of professionals.  This was a visionary concept at the time and remains a principal of care to this day.
All leaders need good mentors Rob explained and the natural progression is that leaders in turn become mentors to others.  He illustrated how he has benefited from many such mentors in the military.  Rob remains active as a Brigadier General in the US Army Reserve commanding the 98th Training Division, headquartered in Rochester NY.

Rob spoke on servant leadership, a phrase first coined by Robert Greenleaf.  But for specifics, Rob presented The Serving Leader, a book by Ken Jennings which gives some practical steps to guide the servant leader.  Ken outlines five ways to transform your team.  Depicted as an inverted triangle, servant leadership is bottom-up not top-down.
Rob also mentioned the importance of "embracing" failure by finding out what worked, what didn't, and how to learn from those mistakes.
The Awareness Breakfast, chaired by Paul Kipfstuhl, FirstMerit Bank, spotlights leadership through the experience of the keynote speaker and begins recruitment for the next LMC Class. Individuals interested in learning more about the LMC Class Year, our signature program, can contact executive director, Lucy Sondles by email exec@leadershipmedinacounty.org or by phone at 330-721-7118.  Applications for the Class of 2011 are currently on the website.
