All weekend I presumed that at this moment—the moment before I walked into the Leadership Medina County headquarters to begin my final graduation requirement, a three week internship, for Walsh Jesuit High School, otherwise known as Senior Experience—I would feel nervous, scared, and a little awkward. Once I opened the door and was greeted warmly by Lucy Sondles and Susan Vlcek, I knew I was right at home. |
I am no stranger to Leadership Medina County; I was a member of the Junior LMC class of 2008, and my father, Gary Werner, was a member of the LMC class of 2006. I was familiar with the program and the incredible people who ran it. But still, I was not quite sure what to expect during the next three weeks. Although there were some monotonous periods, such as editing the database entry on Commence, a virtual address book, or resizing pictures on the 2010 LMC Graduation PowerPoint presentation, on Friday, May 28, 2010 it will be very hard to say goodbye to the three wonderful people I have come to know and love during these three, astonishingly short weeks: Lucy, Susan and Kathy DeLoss.

Admittedly, I found myself asking the question, ‘What is the purpose of Leadership Medina County?’ several times during my first few days. In my third week, the answer is finally beginning to dawn on me; LMC encourages the American dream. Two of the criteria to become a member of a LMC class are to promote entrepreneurship by demonstrating leadership skills in civic activities, non-profit organizations, and governmental affairs as well attracting business to a Medina County-based business. With 20+ graduated LMC classes, Medina County is now teeming with innovative individuals who have been spurred to discover hidden gems in our own backyard, something LMC inspires these individuals to do. What LMC does is a beautiful thing; it reminds us how success is truly attained, and that is by conceiving a dream, making it happen, and actively spreading the word to attract positive feedback.

| Although I may or may not work for a Medina County-based business when I am older, the inspiration LMC has instilled within me to steer myself into success will stay with me for decades to come. My only regret is that I cannot continue to work with this awesome organization through the summer. To Lucy, Susan, and Kathy: thank you! My experiences with you during these past three weeks have turned my perception of Senior Experience from a graduation requirement into a privilege. |
