Even the snow cooperated,as the Class of 2010 learned about education opportunities in the county through the planning of Chair Will Koran, Superintendent of Medina Co Educational Service Center (ESC), and his team.  The class was introduced to the efforts of many school systems which through leadership competencies of compassion, building effective teams, and managing diversity resulted in student achievement.

It was all in the family at the first school visit, as Andy Waite,‘10, read the reasons that led to naming Ralph E Waite Elementary School after his grandfather.  Mr. Ralph Waite plays an active roll in the school often reading to students noted Principal Cindy Grice as she, her staff and the LMC Class toured the new school building.
After the tour, Nancy Nimmo, ’09, Director of Special Needs along with and Autism/Behavioral Consultants, Angie Morman, and N’ecole Ast discussed programs for these special students. Accountability through district report cards and implementing State Mandates are challenges that need to be met.  A variety of approaches were outlined by Brian Williams’05, Nancy Duelley,’98 and Laurie Boedecker from Wadsworth, Brunswick and Highland School systems, respectively.
A delicious lunch at the Medina County Career Center (MCCC), Center Café was prepared and served by Restaurant Management students under the guidance of Chef Tony Stanislo.  Tom Evans,’10, Chris Kurth,’99 and Christopher Kalina’06 were determined to walk the calories off and took the class on a whirlwind tour of the many programs, certifications, and classes offered by the MCCC.  Fun Fact: Most of the MCCC students go on to college.
The last stop of the day was Wadsworth Middle School, recognized for excellent programs, as “An Ohio School to Watch.” Principal Roger Wright talked about Care Teams a unique approach for middle students at risk. On the other side of the spectrum, programs for the districts’ gifted and talented students were highlighted by Jacinda Yonker and Michele Wargo, specialists in the field.

Cooperation goes beyond school systems as Mayor Robin Laubaugh and Superintendent Dale Fortner’01 discussed the leadership it took to enroll the support of many entities in the Wadsworth Community Partnership.  Summa Wadsworth Rittman Hospital, City of Wadsworth, Wadsworth Public Library and Wadsworth City Schools are part of this partnership which shares facilities within a new high school complex.

A class favorite was round table discussions with the “superintendent of choice.”  Class members had an opportunity for constructive conversations with participating superintendents Dale Fortner, Will Koran, Mike Larson, Denis Honkala, Daryl Kabulus, Catherine Aukerman and Assistant Superintendent Rick Forney.  Variety, innovation, student centered....it was education Medina County style.
