Saying Goodbye to Ben Hallock’ 92

Ben Hallock was a man in motion; he was involved in all aspects of business, family and civic life. Back in 1986 Ben helped develop and run a Medina Chamber program which familiarized chamber members with the city of Medina along with providing a leadership development component.  Later at the chamber’s urging, he helped transform this chamber program to Leadership Medina County.
It was no small task.  Ben was on the founding board of LMC, participated in the Charter (first) Class, and attended all program days helping the newly hired Executive Director, Elaine Reichart. After a number of years, he scaled back his involvement to State Government Day.

Each State Government Day during the bus ride Ben would give a civic lesson to the class which was more relevant and humorous than any civic lesson in school.  In Columbus Ben at 6 foot 4 was a beacon leading the group through the maze of hallways in the Capitol and crowds of people delivering the class to their next destination on time.

Ben introduced the speakers, guided the class discussions and shared his own experiences to better encourage class members to get involved.  This program day is unique to LMC, few community leadership programs in the state travel to Columbus each year due to expense.  But LMC does, it’s because of Ben.

When Ben was diagnosed with ALS and he could no longer encourage classes to get involved he decided to establish a permanent fund providing the opportunity for future classes to understand the workings of State Government and to encourage civic engagement. The LMC Board was honored to establish the Ben Hallock Leadership Legacy Fund for State Government Day and Civic Engagement.

Although this man of motion was stopped by ALS, the force of his personality and belief in community involvement was not. If you’d like to read Ben’s own thoughts written before he died, click here.
