So Many Great Kids

Nine years ago this program began with a class of 24. Monday, after picking up the completed applications from two of our eight county schools, we had 28 applicants. The final tally was 47. We had determined we could accept 40. How difficult could it be for seven community leaders to narrow the field down by a half dozen or so?

Ask them. Applications were read and reread. Grade, gender, community involvement, and essay responses were all considered. The first consensus this group reached was that every applicant was worthy of a place in the class. “It’s not what people often think,” one reviewer thought out loud. “There are so many great kids.”

We have a unique opportunity to play a defining role in the life of some great kids. On September 24, we walk onto the leadership stage and support all of the great young people who are now the Class of 2012. Many thanks to those who have gotten us to this place. Many more thanks to those who will get us through another extraordinary year.

Most of all, thanks to the great kids who are committed to investing their time and energy into becoming even better.
