Below the surface, change happens.  Young people hear more than the words presented.  They hear the passion, the commitment, and the caring.  And it changes them.   No one can convey that better than the students themselves:

“On the opening retreat day of Junior Leadership Medina County, I was pretty nervous. I wasn't friends with anyone from any of the schools and I only knew a couple people from my school. I sat down at a table by myself and was eating breakfast. Three girls from Medina, Summer, Katie, and Malicia, asked me to join them at their table. I did and we started talking and now we are good friends. I think they were real leaders that day.”   Angel Parey, Medina County Career Center

“Jr. Leadership was a wonderful experience. I meet many important community members and saw all that our community has to offer. Through Jr. Leadership I grew as a leader and learned many valuable leadership skills.” Devon Doepker, Wadsworth High School

“I would like to say that meeting Judge Collier was and extremely eye opening experience for me because before then I was clueless with what I wanted to do with my future. Listening to him speak inspired me. I remember his phrase, "I never worked a day in my life," and I thought to myself, I want that to happen to me, to be able to enjoy my job as much as he does. I decided that I want to be a judge like him, to be able to help my community influence the lives of others and hopefully impact others as he does.”   Kasey McGee, Buckeye High School

“Learning from Seth Kujat's life experiences made me want to do new things in my own life and continue to grow as a leader. It was even better when I ended up sitting with him at the banquet and getting to know him!”   Zack Miglich, Cloverleaf High School.

“Of all the events I have encountered through Junior Leadership of Medina County in the past few months, one event still sticks in my mind. I had an opportunity to have lunch with Mr. Jon Park, the Westfield Bank President. He sat down at my table at the Westfield Bank Inn and we had a great conversation. I originally had the idea from my father to go into a Finance or Accounting career, and once Mr. Park started to express what he does, it was all up hill from there. He taught me a lot about a banking career and what kind of people they look for. It all greatly interested me!”

I will have to tell you though, I was a bit nervous eating lunch with Mr. Park. But, we had learned from Ms. Lucy Sondles how to have proper etiquette when eating at a formal dining setting. Thank you Ms. Sondles.

At the end of this particular day, we had a panel of many inspiring individuals who shared with us how Medina County has influenced their lives. All of them were great to listen to and I was becoming even more aware of how grateful I am to be a part of Medina County. This was an experience I will never forget!   Hayley McQuate, Wadsworth High School

At the graduation banquet, students spoke with true excitement and gratitude.  Their families expressed great appreciation for the opportunities offered.  And dreams that were not recognized a few months ago became clearer.  Most importantly, these young people left more fully believing they can achieve those dreams.

In closing, each emerging leader was reminded to ‘feel empowered to be great, because anything less really isn’t worthy of your time.”   It was a good reminder for us all.
