JrLMC: Sharing the Story

Most of us learn best from a combination of all modalities, and this is the basis for the format of our Junior Leadership program days.  There is no manual.  Instead, there are opportunities to see the willingness of community leaders to open up their facilities, their resources and their life stories for the purpose of enriching others.

Take our Leadership Development day as an example.  There is no formula to memorize, no vocabulary list.  Instead, there are leaders such as Denise Testa '09 who opened up the use and story of the Medina County University Center to our emerging leaders.  Denise then invited in the University of Akron's Leadership Development staff member Tom Raimondi to share stories, games, and reflective exercises with our class.

Cindy McQuown, from Cornerstone Wellness, put the class into role plays that exemplified the value and potential of good communicators, as well as the pitfalls that may characterize those who may be communication-challenged.

With a great diversity in their life experiences, community activist Michelle Powell '12,  Medina City Council president Cindy Fuller and JrLMC alum/ U of A law student Jordan Tekulve, stressed the absolute imperative that each of us find what our passions in life are and commit ourselves to igniting that energy toward positive change.

This is how we learn to be a leader: we see, feel and hear it, we recognize our own potential in the realized action of others, and then we commit to converting that abstract potential to concrete action.
Many thanks to each of you who contribute to this transformation in our willing young leaders.

Dear JrLMC,
Thank you for the opportunities which you constantly present to me.  Last week’s visit to
Wolf Creek Environmental Center meant a lot to me.  It really made me think about the abstract thought that goes into designing, running and nurturing a community.  Every piece of land that is presented to us is an opportunity, an open door. As a leader, and a citizen, it is our job to take that opportunity and let it blossom.

This program has not only helped me improve my leadership skills but it has made me aware of the countless opportunities I meet each and every day.  Thank you for inspiring me to make a difference in my community.           McKay Cavanaugh
