Roger Smalley’94 Executive Director of the Medina Community Design Committee and Susan McKiernan local historian, author and retired professor shared the history of the Medina square including how Medina became the county seat and why Court Street is called Court Street.  Rebuilding the square after two devastating fires in the 1800s helped to create the unique Victorian style of the buildings while leadership over the decades has helped to maintain it.
History Day started at the Liverpool Town Hall where the class learned about Indian life from Captain Wolfe, a Delaware Indian, researched and interpreted by Medina County Treasurer John Burke, ’96.  Justice Warner (Rod Knight, ’01) paid a visit too, recounting the shenanigans involved in the sale of the salt springs land of Hardscrabble and the Valley City areas.
Other men made history including  A.I. Root, entrepreneur, bee keeper, inventor and founder of the A.I. Root Company still operating today. Chairman of the Board John Root, presented the history of A.I. to the class. Brad Root ’98, President, welcomed the class and talked about the company’s future.
The day ended with class teams reporting on the historical locations they visited.  Each team presented a power point  from one of three locations: Zion Lutheran Church, Laurel Farms—Brunswick Historical Society or the York One Room School House home of York Historical Society.  Check out their visits at the Photo Gallery on the web site.
