All of the schools in Medina County have been rated "Excellent" by the state. But the topic of school funding still remained an issue despite the ratings. These discussions on school funding turned out to be most valued by the class. Dale Fortner,’01 Superintendent of Wadsworth City Schools has made his power point explanation available to view on line. Click here. It may take some time to load, depending on your computer.
Buckeye Intermediate School played host for the first part of the day. Superintendent Dennis Honkala, Principal Rich Finley, teacher Jill Morton and students showcased their new science room, designed for optimum learning. The "science" of wellness and the role of the school nurse was then presented by Lori Hogue '10.
Following was Commissioner Steve Hambley '95 who presented the research, collaboration and implementation of the shared sales tax. This unique approach to school funding provides funds to districts for capital improvements from sales taxes paid by those who shop in the county.
A lunch prepared by the Chef and Restaurant Management Students of the Medina County Career Center fueled the class for a whirlwind tour of the facility by knowledgeable staff, Christine Kurth, '99, Tresa Goodwin, '03 and Lillian Keenan.
The last stop was Brunswick High School. Three music teachers from Garfield Elementary (Jan Swanson), Highland HS (Chris Ilg) and Brunswick HS (Jay Wardeska) compared their music programs and benefits for students.
|
A class favorite was the round table discussions with a “superintendent of choice.” Class members had an opportunity for constructive conversations with superintendents: Dale Fortner, Will Koran, Mike Larson, Denis Honkala, Daryl Kabulus, Catherine Aukerman and Randy Steep. Variety, innovation, student centered....it was education Medina County style.
