Excellence in Leadership Award Winners

| Congratulations to the following winners for demonstration excellence in leadership within their field of expertise. They were chosen by a committee of alumni and board members from a number of very qualified applicants. They are: |
- Business Leadership, Denise Pozderac, President, Transitional Living Centers, Inc.
Nisi Pozderac owns and operates Transitional Living Centers, Inc., a long term care organization which provides community based group home living and habilitation services for developmentally disabled individuals in Medina County. At the helm of this family owned and operated company for the past 30 years, she has been instrumental in its growth in Valley City including new headquarters and a new programming center for clients called Riverside Habilitation Center. These expansions created new jobs and used local companies for the construction whenever possible.
Beyond her own organization, Nisi mentors young business owners, assisting them in their business expansions, helps economic development in the Valley City area and advocates on the state and national level for the developmentally disabled.

- Education Leadership, James J. Hayas, retired Superintendent, Brunswick City Schools
For over thirty years, Jim Hayas has been an integral part of the Brunswick City School District starting with his attendance in grade school, his graduation from Brunswick High School and his return in 1994 as Superintendent.
Through his leadership the Brunswick Schools gained the trust and support of the community which led to the passage of 15 tax issues. This allowed for new growth, renovation of existing buildings, new collaborations with private and public entities such as Tri-C and connecting the schools with local groups such as veterans.
Jim and his staff helped initiate new teaching standards resulting in the district receiving the State’s highest rating ”Excellent with Distinction.” It’s clear that Jim’s leadership has left the school district poised to meet the challenges of the future.

- Health Care Leadership, Gary D. Hallman, retired President, CEO Medina General Hospital
Gary Hallman recently retired as President and CEO of Medina General Hospital. His distinguished career at the hospital spanned from 1988 to 2009. He started as a Senior Vice President, served next as Executive President before spending 16 years as the hospital’s President and CEO.
His tenure at Medina Community Hospital and then Medina General Hospital could be summed up as years of progress and growth as the hospital under Gary’s leadership continually responded to a growing community’s health care needs. This including new building, state-of-the-art medical technology, expanded education offerings and more. His final accomplishment as President and CEO was to partner with the Cleveland Clinic to ensure the future of Medina General Hospital for generations to come.

- Public Service Leadership, Charles Calvert, Ohio Elections Commissioner
Chuck Calvert has served Medina County in many ways, most notably as State Representative from the 69th District for 8 years. His vision for high tech job growth and development in Ohio has benefited this county.
Under his tenure, funding for the Technology Park and the Medina County University Center/University of Akron was secured, resulting in a life long learning environment for generations of families and businesses. Chuck was also a major force in creation and funding of the Third Frontier Initiative and continues to serve on their advisory board.
Chuck has served on the boards of education for four Medina County school systems, been instrumental in widening I-71, found funding for county recycling center and he continues to assist business owners in starting and growing their businesses.

- Medina County Leadership, James A. Gerspacher, Agent, Gerspacher Real Estate Group, Inc.
Jim Gerspacher’s name has become synonymous with commercial real estate, economic development, civic responsibility and devotion to community. Always one who is willing to get things done and move the county forward, Jim is a founding member of several community groups and a servant leader of countless others. He has brought his leadership skills and extensive knowledge of the county to endeavors that bring new businesses to Medina County and provide better jobs for the residents.
He has helped to improve the quality of life for county residents through his work with community agencies, service clubs and non-profits. He is a wise visionary who appreciates the value of preservation and conservation, but understands the need for and the elements of well-planned growth.
