| Jim served 38 years in the Brunswick City Schools as a teacher, a coach, the Principal of Brunswick High School, and District Superintendent. He was a visible leader who loved interacting with the students and community members, gaining their trust and support. In his fifteen years as Superintendent, he had the phenomenal record of passing fifteen tax issues, which drove the district’s success. His willingness to listen to the opinions of staff, administrators, and board members, and to be proactive in changing what and how they taught, ultimately led the Brunswick City Schools to receive the Excellent with Distinction Award from the State of Ohio. Upon Jim’s retirement in 2009, the Brunswick Board of Education reflected the community’s pride and gratitude by dedicating the high school’s performing arts facility to him, renaming it The James J. Hayas Performing Arts Center. |
Jim worked with the County Educational Service Center and other superintendents, changing the face of educational programming in Medina County. He was instrumental in increasing the usage of technology in schools; in the planning and implementation of the sales tax initiative to support schools throughout the county; as well as in the development of the Medina County-University of Akron Distance Learning Program. Additionally, he helped establish the partnership between the City of Brunswick and Cuyahoga Community College, resulting in the construction of the Brunswick branch of Tri-C. He also participated in the effort to bring Lorain County Community College to Brunswick, offering educational opportunities for all. |
James Hayas has led a life of excellence, positively affecting individuals, schools, and an entire community. His level of commitment, leadership, and service to the Brunswick City Schools is legendary, leaving an indelible mark on education in Medina County. |
